Tiling in a hot climate

Tiled floors are the norm in Cyprus because they stay cool. Large-format porcelain is now the most common choice, alongside marble in older and higher-end homes. Large tiles look clean but need a very flat base and full adhesive coverage; hollow spots under a tile are the main reason large tiles crack or sound loose later.

Outside, terraces heat up and cool down every day. Without movement joints at the right spacing, tiles lift or crack along a line. On balconies and roof terraces the waterproofing underneath the tiles matters as much as the tiles themselves, because water that gets through the grout will find its way into the rooms below.

Pool surrounds and outdoor areas

Around pools, choose tiles with a proper slip-resistance rating for wet bare feet, and a light colour that does not get too hot to stand on in August. Ask the tiler which adhesive and grout they will use outside, as standard indoor products can break down in sun and chlorinated water.

Common questions

Can new tiles be laid over old ones?

Sometimes, if the old tiles are firmly bonded and level and the extra height does not affect doors. A good tiler will test for loose tiles first.

Why do my terrace tiles keep cracking?

Usually missing movement joints, poor adhesive coverage or water getting underneath. Ask the tiler to find the cause before replacing them.

Should I buy the tiles or leave it to the tiler?

Either works. If you buy them, order around 10% extra for cuts and breakages, and keep a few spare for future repairs.
